Susilo Keeps Stable Numbers in Indonesia

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The majority of people in Indonesia are content with the performance of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s government, according to a poll by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI). 53 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Susilo’s leadership, down one point since October.

Susilo—a security minister who ran as the candidate of the Democrat Party (PD)—won the September 2004 presidential election with 60.62 per cent of the vote in a run-off over incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri of the Struggling Indonesian Democratic Party (PDIP). The vote marked the first time Indonesian voters picked their head of state through the ballot box.

On Feb. 2, a 46-year-old military amphibious tank sank during a routine exercise in waters off the East Java town of Situbondo, killing seven marines. On Feb. 5, Susilo ordered the Indonesian Military (TNI) to renew its machinery, saying, “We have decided to ground aging defence equipment. I will hand down sanctions on TNI leaders who ignore the order.”

The next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for July 2009.
