Public Perception of Indonesia-South Korea Relations

  • Over 25 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Korea (The Republic of Korea).

  • South Korea is a strategic partner of Indonesia

  • South Korea:

    • 7th largest investor in Indonesia with total investment of US$2.5 billion

    • Trade volume between the two countries US$20.8 billion (2023)

  • Indonesia and South Korea are members of the G-20 and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)

  • The popularity of the Korean Wave or Hallyu in Indonesia

    • Indonesia was the 2nd most K-pop-watching country on YouTube (Won So 2020 in Sarajwati 2020)

  • A sustainable and productive partnership between Indonesia and South Korea can be realized if people’s attitudes toward various aspects of their relationship are well understood.

  • Research objectives:

    • Capturing Indonesian public sentiment towards South Korea and various aspects related to South Korea (politics, culture, tourism, education, economy, etc.)

    • Comparing the public sentiment vis-à-vis other major countries.

    • Providing input to policymakers to enhance the partnership between the two countries further.
