Dikenal sebagai ahli Indonesia dari The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies di ANU, Australia, dan banyak melakukan penelitian mengenai Indonesia dan negara-negara Asia Tenggara. Bukunya menjadi referensi utama di bidangnya: The Army and Politics in Indonesia (1978) dan Government and Society in Malaysia (1996).
